John Walker Motson was born on July 10, 1945, in Salford, Lancashire. Motson grew up in a religious family because his father was a Methodist minister. He attended Culford School, where football was generally frowned upon, with rugby and cricket being the most important sports.

Motty started working for the Barnet newspaper in 1963 and later moved on to the Sheffield Morning Telegraph in 1967. John Motson was married to Anne Motson.
