The comedians came under fire after it was revealed that Dave Chappelle made transphobic comments while presenting John Mulaney’s gig in Ohio.
On Friday, while the comedian John Mulaney was performing as part of his “From Scratch” tour, Dave Chappelle started the show and offered what some audience members perceived to be “transphobic jokes.” This infuriated a few admirers.
Chappelle opened the concert at an event at the Value City Arena of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Because attendees were told to lock their phones prior to the event, there is no video of the event. Nevertheless, after the show, numerous spectators voiced their disapproval of the performance on social media.
Chappelle made a surprise opening appearance, according to attendees, and cracked jokes about the transgender population.
John Mulaney Controversy For Transphobic Jokes: What Did He Say?

In general, John Mulaney is adored by all. Because he elected to have Dave Chappelle open for him and the comedian made “anti-trans” comments, he is currently the target of harsh criticism.
DC was a surprise guest who gave a set before John stepped out, according to attendees who went to social media following John’s comedy gig on Friday night in Columbus, Ohio, where phones were locked up in a pouch so no one could record it.
In contrast to Chappelle’s contentious and offensive remarks, Mulaney’s content is often uncontroversial. In his stand-up performances, Mulaney often stays away from addressing political or social topics in favor of self-deprecating humor, personal anecdotes, and stories of his struggles with alcoholism and addiction.
After Mulaney became trending on Twitter the following day as a result of the surprise Chappelle set, comedians began to reply in turn.
What Did Dave Chappelle Joke About?
Some people interpreted Dave’s remark about gender fluidity as “It was a knife that identified as a gun,” which is supposedly what he said. Fair enough, I guess.
It appears that after garnering some laughter, he continued and added—not that there’s anything wrong with that—about a few audience members he suspected might be gay. All of it seems to have been uttered, although it has raised some controversy.
It does seem like Dave is obsessed with making jokes about transgender issues. He did this when performing at the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago, and after the accused attacker, Isaiah Lee, had been tackled, he even made a joke about him, calling him a “trans man.”
Viewers’ Reaction To His Transphobic Jokes
Many of these people believe that Dave’s appearance made them feel as though they were being ambushed, especially after he allegedly continued to make jokes that they felt were homophobic and transphobic.
The defense asserts that many of these paying spectators are actually LGBT individuals or consider themselves allies and that they came out to see JM, not Dave. They assert that if they had known that Chappelle would be performing in place of them, they would never have purchased tickets.
Naturally, all of this is a result of the controversy surrounding his Netflix special, “The Closer,” which has been criticized for being transphobic despite DC’s denial and the streamer’s support.
Dave Chappelle Controversy: He Made Jokes About Transgender Community
In recent years, gags regarding the transgender population have dominated Chappelle’s stand-up act. Initially, the comedian’s anti-trans remarks in Netflix specials like “Sticks and Stones” from 2019 and “The Closer” from 2021 created criticism.
Organizations like GLAAD and the National Black Justice Coalition criticized Chappelle’s transphobic jokes on “The Closer” for them. J.K. Rowling, the author of “Harry Potter,” and the rapper DaBaby both made anti-trans comments in the past, which Chappelle vigorously defended in extended segments.
Chappelle stirred extra uproar by making a joke about the attacker being a trans man earlier this month after being accosted while performing at a Netflix is a Joke event.
