The “star-studded intervention” of John Mulaney saved his life. John has quipped about his recovery from alcoholism and cocaine addiction in his new Netflix comedy special, ‘John Mulaney: Baby J’. In 2020, the 40-year-old comedian sought treatment for alcoholism and cocaine addiction. comedian, actor, writer, and producer
He said,
“Let me just say this now, I’m not trying to be strange. It was a celebrity-filled intervention. It resembled a strong group.
It was an excellent crew. As angry as I was when I walked in, I thought,
“This is a good line-up; it’s actually quite flattering in its own way.”
“It was like ‘We Are the World’ for alternative comedians over 40.” All entertainers. However, nobody made a joke the entire night.”
John compared his intervention to a “prank”
He said,
“That night, I was so angry. I had been deceived. In essence, an intervention is a practical joke. I was pranked by them.
They were attempting to dictate my life decisions and exert control over me. They sent me to rehab for several months. I was helpless. I felt very furious.”
John is thrilled to have resolved his problems and resumed performing.
The stand-up comedian, who rose to prominence as a writer on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ said,
“Listen, I am grateful to everyone at my intervention for the opportunity to do this program and to be standing here. They stepped in. They confronted me and saved my life completely.”
John entered rehab in late 2020, and a source at the time reported that his friends and family supported his decision.
The source told the Page Six column of the New York Post:
“John’s friends and family are relieved that he’s finally getting help and focusing on his health.”
