The body of John “The Badge” Roberts was found in his Winlaton home in 2012, and his family has no idea who killed him.

On the first anniversary of John’s death, Jennifer Roberts pleaded with anyone who knew who killed him to come forward so that they might stop someone from killing him again.

One of Tyneside’s biggest-ever murder investigations began with a discovery. Detectives have made an appeal to a murderer’s conscience in an effort to ultimately solve a murder case.

Four years ago today, John “The Badge” Roberts, a dedicated Newcastle United fan, was found dead in his Gateshead residence. According to top officer Lisa Theaker, the murderer may have revealed their secret to friends or relatives.

Her comments come as detectives investigating the unsolved death make a new appeal for help in identifying his killer.

How did John the Badge fare?

Winlaton Police officers on patrol on Sunday, December 16, 2012, observed the door to the 32-year-old Park man’s Terrace home was left open and went inside to investigate. Later, they located his body.

The devoted Newcastle United follower was found dead from massive head injuries in his living room.

An investigation into a murder began, and as time went on, it became one of the biggest cases that Northumbria Police investigators had ever worked on.

After John died, his picture was sent to a sizable group of Newcastle United fans at St. James’ Park as police looked into the possibility that the Toon Army might have information that could help them solve the murder.

On December 13, 2012, about 6.30 p.m., John, a single father, was last seen leaving his Winlaton house for the Kandola Store to buy cigarette paper.

He acquired his moniker by peddling pin badges in front of the nearby Tyneside Irish Centre on game days. What happened between the time he left the shop and when his death was found, however, is still a mystery.

Update on the John the Badge Murder Case

Now, four years later, the detective in charge of the investigation is issuing a new appeal for information in the hopes that someone, somewhere, might have crucial evidence that could help identify those accountable for his death.

According to Northumbria Police Detective Chief Inspector Lisa Theaker, the murder of John Roberts is still being investigated and will remain so until the assailants are found.

She added that a lot has changed in the four years since John’s murder, and the person responsible may now be in a totally different circumstance.

Detectives have also combed through more than 3,000 homes in the Winlaton region in an effort to gather information. They also took the unprecedented step of filming a recreation of John’s last known motions using an actor.

No one has been charged with John’s murder despite the fact that numerous persons have been held and interrogated, and all of the suspects have been advised that no further action will be taken against them.
