A suspect has reportedly been detained by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office in connection with the 1980 murder of Mary Robin Walter on January 24.
In a press release, sheriff Brian Bellendir said that Steven L. Hanks, 68, had been arrested in Oxford, Kansas, and was on his way to Barton County. Records show that Hanks resides in Burden, Kansas.
On December 9, 2022, a joint press conference will be held by the BCSO, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Barton County Attorney’s Office.
At 6:45 that evening, Douglas Walter, the victim’s 24-year-old husband, arrived home from work to discover his wife dead in the bedroom in the back where the murder had occurred. Before eight o’clock, he departed for work.
To provide an update on the investigation, the Barton County Attorney’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office will hold a joint news conference.

Sheriff Brian Bellendir said that Steven L. Hanks, 68, of Burden, Kansas, had been transported to Barton County at around 6:38 p.m.
Authorities calculated that Mary Walter missed her nursing class at Barton County Community College since it was held between 9 am and 1 pm.
Police said that they did not discover any evidence of a brawl, sexual assault, robbery, or forced entry when the event took place. However, a.22-caliber pistol was found inside the residence.

The Mary Robin Walter Case, An Update
A joint meeting of the Barton County Attorney’s Office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and Sheriff’s Office took place in the Barton County Courthouse, which is situated at 1400 Main St. in Great Bend.
The Great Bend Tribune reported that Mary R. Walter, age 23, was shot at least nine times on January 24, 1980. The Great Bend Municipal Airport is next to the Nelson Mobile Home Park.
Before Mary died away, Steven L. Hanks was found guilty of attempted rape, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and aggravated robbery in relation to an event that took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1981.
In December 1982, the defendant was prosecuted for misdemeanor criminal trespassing. After the first trial’s jury was deadlocked, a second trial was held.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, the offender received parole in August 1991 and was released from parole in December 1993.
