Since early this morning, Tembo Jr.’s death has been extensively publicized on social media. He’s been in a Lilongwe hospital for a week, but his family didn’t tell anyone until yesterday. Tembo, 91, was taken to an undisclosed hospital in the capital. Tembo Jnr. told the local press that Tembo was admitted to the hospital on Monday and was being treated for pneumonia and dehydration.
As a result of his diabetes, he also required foot surgery. Under the Kamuzu Banda administration, John Zenasi Ungapake Tembo served as both a cabinet minister and the governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
He was also a member of the Dedza South Constituency in parliament. He led the MCP to victory in the 2004 and 2009 elections when the party switched to opposition, and he left politics in 2013. Malawi has suffered a tremendous loss as a result of the death of John Tembo.
John Tembo’s Early Life And Career
Tembo was born on September 14, 1932, in the Central Region’s Dedza District. Zenus Ungapake Tembo, his father, was a minister for the Church of Central African Presbyterians (CCAP). Before enrolling at Blantyre Secondary School, he attended several elementary institutions.
Later, he went to Lesotho to study political philosophy at the University of Roma, where he received an honorary degree in 1958. In 1958, he began teaching for two years at Robert Blake Secondary School in Dowa’s core section after a brief stint at Dedza Secondary School.
Tembo was persuaded to run for a parliamentary seat in the Dedza South district in 1960, two years after Dr. Banda arrived from Ghana to lead the anti-British colonial movement. Tembo was elected to Nyasaland’s legislative assembly three years before the country gained independence and became the Republic of Malawi.
Following Malawi’s independence, he took over as the country’s second finance minister, succeeding Henry Phillips (later Sir Henry Phillips). The chosen candidate for the role, Dunduzu Chisiza, was murdered in a car accident in 1962
During the momentous Cabinet Crisis of 1964, when most of the President’s closest lieutenants were barred from opposing his plans, John Tembo was the solitary cabinet member who did not resign.
