Jon was born on May 1, 1977, in Washington, D.C., to Joan Lurie and Eric Lawrence “Rick” Bernthal. His nationality is American, and both of his parents are Jewish.
His two brothers, Nicholas and Thomas Bernthal are also family members. Bernthal attended Sidwell Friends School for his secondary studies.
He enrolled at Skidmore College for advanced studies but dropped out to join the Moscow Art Theater in Russia, where he began his performing career.
He quickly realized his love for the craft, and eventually landed his big break in the series ‘The Class.’

Erin Angle, Jon Bernthal’s wife, is his wife. Their wedding took place in 2010, but their love story began many years before that. Jon and his wife met in a traditional setting—the bar!
Jon was instantly smitten when he saw Erin at the pub.
“When I saw Erin, it was truly like angels were singing,” he told Men’s Health, “I had never seen somebody that gorgeous.”
As a result of their conversation, Erin moved from being a stranger at the pub to his girlfriend. However, it was not an easy journey for them all the way.
Jon revealed that they split after a couple of years of dating. He was upset and did everything he could to get her back, which he eventually accomplished.
They returned, and this time it was for good. Jon and his wife are approaching their 12th wedding anniversary, and their family has grown from two to five members.
They have three children: daughter Adeline Bernthal and boys Henry and Billy Bernthal. All three are young and haven’t even reached the troublesome adolescent years, so Jon, the adoring father, has a lot more on his plate.
Balancing a tight work schedule and three children can be difficult. But, fortunately for him, he has an outstanding wife who handles the kids and housekeeping while he concentrates on his profession.

I believe for the most part, as a family, I’m extremely fortunate to have an incredible wife that simply makes it all work.
I’m madly in love.
Of course, he takes every effort to give his children as much time as possible. He had equally supportive parents from whom he might draw inspiration.
