He was born on October 21, 1952, in Havana, Cuba (where he spent his childhood with his two brothers) and raised in Pahokee, Florida, in the mainly agricultural Lake Okeechobee region of western Palm Beach County, where he completed his education. In 1972, he graduated from Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach.
Later, he earned his B.A. in 1976 and his J.D. in 1979 from the University of Florida. Eddie and Aramais, a.k.a. “Dee Dee,” his two brothers, raised him. Jorge served on the Fourth District Court of Appeal for Florida before being appointed to the FL Supreme Court. He only held that position for one day, on January 5, 2009. His tenure was cut short when he was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court as soon as Justice Harry Lee Anstead retired.
On June 30, 2014, Jorge was elected as the 56th Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court, succeeding former Chief Justice Ricky Polston. He became the first person of Hispanic descent to lead Florida’s judicial branch with this appointment.

Caroline (the youngest daughter) is a graduate student at Florida State University and is known to work at Pyramid in Tallahassee as an art instructor for people with developmental disabilities. In August 2014, Jorge and Zulma Labarga celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary.
