Jorge Labarga is a Florida Supreme Court justice who was appointed on January 6, 2009. He was elected as Florida’s 56th Chief Justice and the state’s first Cuban-American on June 30, 2014.

He was elected to the position held by Charles T. Canady on July 1, 2018. His term is set to expire on January 2, 2023, and he is currently running for re-election to the same office. He will be up for re-election on November 8, 2022.

He was born on October 21, 1952, in Havana, Cuba (where he spent his childhood with his two brothers) and raised in Pahokee, Florida, in the mainly agricultural Lake Okeechobee region of western Palm Beach County, where he completed his education. In 1972, he graduated from Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach.

Later, he earned his B.A. in 1976 and his J.D. in 1979 from the University of Florida. Eddie and Aramais, a.k.a. “Dee Dee,” his two brothers, raised him. During his early years of success, he also worked for a number of private enterprises. While working for Cone, Wagner, Nugent, Roth, Romano & Ericksen, P.A., he began doing personal injury trial work.

In 1992, he assisted in the establishment and management of Roth, Duncan & Labarga, P.A. in West Palm Beach, where he practiced and specialized in personal injury litigation and criminal defense.From 1996 to 2009, Jorge Labarga worked for the 15th Circuit Court in Palm Beach County, Florida. He rose to prominence during the United States Presidential Elections in 2000 when he refused to accept a new county-only vote. He preferred the statement stating-

“…elections must be held on the same day across the United States, not just in one region…”

Jorge served on the Fourth District Court of Appeal for Florida before being appointed to the FL Supreme Court. He only held that position for one day, on January 5, 2009. His tenure was cut short when he was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court as soon as Justice Harry Lee Anstead retired.

On June 30, 2014, Jorge was elected as the 56th Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court, succeeding former Chief Justice Ricky Polston. He became the first person of Hispanic descent to lead Florida’s judicial branch with this appointment.

Caroline (the youngest daughter) is a graduate student at Florida State University and is known to work at Pyramid in Tallahassee as an art instructor for people with developmental disabilities. In August 2014, Jorge and Zulma Labarga celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary.
