“A Smuggler’s Bible,” McElroy’s first book, was published in 1966. “A Smuggler’s Bible,” according to McElroy, “is like everyone’s first novel, trying to put so much between the covers… an It’s a young book, and young people still seem to like it.”
Due to the encyclopedic nature of his novels, especially Women and Men, McElroy’s writing is frequently grouped with that of William Gaddis and Thomas Pynchon (1987). His short fiction has been distributed in literary journals since its inception. Don DeLillo’s and David Foster Wallace’s work contain echoes of McElroy’s.
McElroy’s work is often preoccupied with the role of science in American society; Exponential, a series of essays published in Italy in 2003, gathers science and technology journalism for the New York Review of Books, mostly from the 1970s and 1980s.
Norman Mailer was interviewed by McElroy and his Queens College class in 1980. For the Village Voice in 2002, he conducted an interview with Harry Mathews. In his essay “Neural Neighborhoods,” McElroy discussed his fiction and influences.
