Joseph Walter Jackson married Katherine on November 5, 1949, and bought a small house in 1950. The couple’s first child, Maureen Reillette “Rebbie” Jackson, was born four months later, on May 29, 1950, in the Jackson home. To support his family, Joseph abandoned his plans to become an experienced fighter and began working at the facility as a full-time crane administrator.

Later on, he needed low-maintenance work and found it at American Foundries in East Chicago. Katherine, his wife, kept a close eye on their growing family. In the late 1950s, she began working as a low-level employee at Sears in Gary.
