Josh Brolin: Rough Early Life With Mother Jane Agee

Josh Brolin

Josh Brolin is a well-known actor who has appeared in films such as Avengers: Endgame, Oldboy, and No Country for Old Men.

Aside from acting, Brolin enjoys writing poetry, prose, and plays. He began when he was eight years old and has never stopped.

Throughout his life, he has written thousands of poems, many of which are about his mother, who has had a significant impact on his life.

Not only was she his biggest influence growing up, but her death also played a role in shaping Brolin into the man he is today.

The following is an examination of Brolin’s relationship with his mother, Jane Cameron Agee.

Mother Jane Agee and Josh Brolin

On February 12, 1968, Brolin was born to actor James Brolin and Jane Agee, a Texas-born wildlife activist.

His father was frequently away filming TV shows. Agee raised Brolin and his brother Jess on a 100-acre ranch in Paso Robles as a result.
Agee worked for the California Department of Fish and Game, rescuing animals that had been illegally owned.

When speaking with Men’s Health about his childhood and mother, Brolin revealed that he and his brother grew up on a farm that also housed wolves, coyotes, gorillas, mountain lions, and bears.

The actor also revealed that he and Jess have been doing chores around the animals since they were six years old.

“She had this strange bond with animals. “She’d come up against these 500-pound silverbacks, and they’d just crumble,” he explained.

“She had us do chores around the animals as six-year-olds, which was extremely irresponsible. But she said, ‘We’re only here for a short time, so let’s get it done.’ She was a tough lady.”

When discussing his mother, Brolin stated that Agee was a one-of-a-kind individual. He described her as “extreme,” and recalled some extreme situations he and his mother had been in, such as drinking in a church or her drawing a gun on “some dude.”

Brolin revealed that she was involved in the big pyramid scheme of 1980, adding to her extreme personality.

“[Agee] finished in the top five. I was probably 11 or 12. “She had 12 pyramids running at one point, and I was the counter,” he explained.

“I counted the money in bags as it came in. The victims of the scheme placed her on a hit list. She kept a 9mm pistol on her nightstand.”

Josh Brolin’s Reaction to Jane Agee’s Death

Despite Agee’s eccentricities, Brolin has been open about how much he adored his mother. So it was especially difficult for him when she died on his 27th birthday after crashing into a tree.

Brolin believes she was reaching for her phone and overcompensated when the accident occurred.

Brolin called Agee on his birthday every year and sent her flowers with the message, “Thank you for this life.”

He hadn’t gotten to speak with her on his 27th birthday because he was still working.

“She dialed my number and got an answering machine message that said, ‘Oh hey, what’s up? I’m having difficulty hearing you. ‘Who is he?’ “And she burst out laughing,” he explained.

“That was the last time I heard from my mother. She died four hours later.”

Brolin told Men’s Health that he saved the tape and continues to listen to it. He also stated that he had later put it away because he had been listening to it far too much.

Brolin admits to being “lost and spinning” two years after her death. He did, however, admit that he used to put himself in situations of self-destruction because Agee’s love for him was conditional and only showed up when he got himself into trouble.

And after she died, he said he felt liberated and mature.
