Fred was born and educated in Springfield, Illinois, and after graduating from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1978, he joined CNN’s Sports Tonight in 1980 as an original co-host.

Hickman won CableACE awards in 1989 and 1993, as well as a New York Sports Emmy in 2004.

Fred was nominated for the CableACE (Award for Cable Excellence) for best sports presenter from 1988 to 1993. In both 1989 and 1993, Hickman won the award.
