On February 12, 1938, Judith Sussman was born in New Jersey, United States. Her parents, Judith Sussman Esther (a homemaker) and Rudolph Sussman raised her (a dentist). Judy grew up in a Jewish family with her elder brother, who is five years her senior.
Judy graduated from Battin High School in 1956 and enrolled at Boston University, but she was unable to complete her studies due to mononucleosis. She later got a Bachelor of Education degree from New York University in 1961.

Judy married her first husband, John M. Blume, on August 15, 1959, while still in college. Judy and her husband first met while Judy was a student at New York University. After their marriage, John went to law school, while Judy stayed at home. Randy (a therapist) and Lawrence Andrew are their two children (a filmmaker).
Randy Blume-Pickle, her son, is married and has a child. Furthermore, Judy and John divorced in 1976, and the reason for the divorce was that Judy felt suffocated in the relationship. Furthermore, following her divorce from her first husband, she married Thomas A. Kitchen in 1976 and relocated to New Mexico for Thomas’s job. Judy was unable to deal with her second spouse and divorced in 1978.
She did not give up hope despite her two failed marriages. In 1987, she married for the third time George Cooper, a former law professor who became a non-fiction writer. Judy’s husband’s first marriage gave her a stepdaughter named Amanda. The couple is still together, and no reports of their divorce have appeared.
Judy Blume still bears her first husband’s surname. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. Blume underwent multiple ultrasounds. She was also diagnosed with cervical cancer 17 years earlier. She later authored an adult novel titled Smart Women, which helped her gain much of her renown. Her other works include Here’s to You, Rachel Robinson, and Just as Long as We’re Together.
