Goodyear, 81, portrayed the bartender who adores leopard skin from 1966 until 2003.

“My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heartbreaking diagnosis,” Mr. Brand stated.

“Unfortunately, Julie has been experiencing amnesia for a while, and we have been seeking medical counsel and support. However, we now understand that there is little chance of a turnaround and that her illness will only become worse over time, maybe quickly.

We decided to make the diagnosis public since Julie still enjoys going out to dine and seeing her friends. Fans love to meet her and she is invariably recognized by them, although she can become disoriented, especially if she is weary. I’m hoping everyone will comprehend.

Goodyear helped Bet Lynch grow into one of the most enduring and well-liked characters on the ITV soap show.

The actress has also made appearances on reality programs including Celebrity Fit Club and Celebrity Big Brother.

“Our hearts go out to Julie Goodyear and her family, following the announcement that she is living with dementia,” said Hilary Evans, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“So many of us have wonderful memories of seeing Julie in the classic role of Bet Lynch on television.

“Julie’s husband’s decision to share this information and contribute to the much-needed awareness-raising for dementia, a disorder that affects nearly a million people in the UK today, is tremendously brave.

“A diagnosis is truly heartbreaking because there are no treatments to slow down or stop the diseases that cause dementia.”
