He was born on October 18, 1981, in Los Angeles, California, USA, as the third of three children to Marilou Cantiller and Ken Hakuta, a renowned TV personality in the early 1990s.

Justin is an American citizen with Filipino ancestry from his mother and Korean ancestry from his father’s side. He has two younger brothers, Kenzo and Aki Hakuta.

Justin enrolled at Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Mexico after graduating from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. He later enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 2003, and where he eventually earned his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Paik Kun was born in 1951 in Seoul, South Korea, as the eldest child of Paik Nam-il, an executive of Teaching Textile Industry Co., which Kun’s grandfather Paik Nak Seung co-founded. His family moved to Japan shortly after his birth, where he spent the majority of his youth and changed his name to Ken Hakuta before moving to the United States. He shot to fame in the early 1980s when he invented the Wacky Wall Walker, which became one of the bestselling toys of the day, selling over 240 million units and earning more than $20 million in revenue.

Between 1988 to 1994, he presented his own television invention show called “Dr. Fad,” which promoted children’s inventiveness and creativity, and in 1998, he created AllHerb.com, an e-commerce company focusing on herbal treatments.

Justin Hakuta and Ali Wong originally met at a mutual friend’s wedding in 2010. She invited him to one of her stand-ups, and they began dating after that. ‘Enthralled’ by her performance, Justin attended practically every one of Ali’s early gigs, not only supporting her but also assisting her in adjusting and improving her content. After four years of dating, the pair decided to take their relationship to the next level and marry — Justin and Ali’s wedding ceremony took place on November 27, 2014.

They had their first child, a girl named Mari, in November of the following year, and another daughter named Nikki in December of the following year. Justin currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with his family.

Justin began his professional career as a developer at the DirectTV DLab, a digital innovation laboratory in Los Angeles that focuses on developing innovative digital products. In 2011, he joined the startup company GoodRx as a product manager, evaluating prescription drug pricing across the United States and offering reduced drug expenses and drug coupons.

Later that year, Hakuta coupled his ‘gift for entrepreneurship’ with his love of meditation and a healthy lifestyle to establish YogaStart, an online resource for finding wellness services and yoga programs throughout the United States.

Justin also leveraged his yoga and wellness experience to contribute to the Huffington Post with a series of health-related pieces and partner with a number of organizations, including Seventh Generation Inc., Honest Tea, and Patagonia Outdoor Clothing & Gear.
