Justin Pearson later expressed his gratitude to Oceana Gillian on Twitter, writing, “Thanks to my beautiful fiancee for fighting with the people and working to make justice possible.”

Justin Pearson’s Memphis-based family history
Justin J. Pearson is a Memphis, Tennessee native who was born in 1995. Both the politician’s father and mother are preachers.
When Pearson was eleven years old, his family moved to Washington, D.C. Justin’s father enrolled at Howard University to complete a master’s degree.
Four years after the Pearson family had returned to Memphis, he was shocked to see the disparity between his new school, which lacked funding, and his previous high school in Centreville, Virginia.
At Mitchell High School in inner-city Memphis, Pearson became active in the student council, spoke out in favor of AP classes and textbooks, and joined the debate team. When he received his high school diploma, he was the valedictorian of his class.
Justin Pearson graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, with a bachelor’s degree in government and legal studies in 2017.
Justin Pearson was admitted to the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs’ summer public policy institute when he was a Mellon Mays scholar at Bowdoin.
