Kara Walker was born to Larry Walker and Gwendolyn Walker on November 26, 1969. Walker was born in the United States, in the city of Stockton, California. Her full name is Kara Elizabeth Walker. She is of African American origin and holds an American passport. Her father is an artist and professor at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, and her mother is a secretary.
Her family eventually relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where she graduated from the Atlanta College of Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in 1991. In 1994, she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.
