Karch Kiraly, who is he?
Charles Frederick “Karch” Kiraly, born November 3, 1960, is an American volleyball player, coach, and broadcast commentator. He was an important member of the US National Team that won gold medals in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games.
Karch went on to win a gold medal in beach volleyball at the 1996 Olympic Games, the first time the sport had been introduced. He is the only athlete to have won Olympic medals in both indoor and beach volleyball. He played for the UCLA Bruins volleyball team, which won three national championships under head coach Al Scates.
In addition, he completed the “triple crown” by guiding an Olympic gold-medal winning team and earning gold medals in both indoor and beach volleyball.

Childhood and Early Life
Kiraly was born and reared in the California town of Santa Barbara. Kiraly competed in his first beach volleyball tournament at the age of 11 with his father.
Laszlo Kiraly, who had been a member of the Hungarian Junior National team before fleeing the country during the 1956 Hungarian national rebellion, pushed him to start playing volleyball when he was six years old.
Kiraly was a varsity volleyball player for Santa Barbara High School’s boys’ varsity team. His father was a driving force behind the development of the school’s boys volleyball program.During his high school years, he was invited to join the Junior National Team, where he competed for three years.
Kiraly’s high school coach, Rick Olmstead, is credited with instilling in him the value of hard work and tenacity.
Professional Career
As a member of the United States Men’s National Team, Kiraly earned silver medals at the NORCECA Championships in 1981 and 1987, as well as gold medals in 1983 and 1985.
He accomplished the volleyball triple crown by winning gold medals at the 1984 Olympic Games (for which he earned the FIVB Sportsmanship Award), the 1985 World Cup (for which he was named MVP), and the 1986 World Championship.
Kiraly was also named MVP and earned gold medals as team captain in the 1988 Olympic Games, as well as the Savin Cup and Pan American Games.
After winning two Olympic gold medals, Kiraly went on to play professional volleyball in the Italian leagues from 1990 to 1992. He and his squad II Messaggero won the World Club Championship in 1991, and he was named MVP.
