Gene was raised in Milwaukee by his father, William J. Silberman, a novelty item manufacturer and salesman, and his mother, Jeanne Baer, a housewife.
His mother had rheumatic fever, and the doctor told Gene to do whatever he could to make her laugh. After seeing his older sister perform on stage, Gene asked her teacher if he could teach him acting as well.
He began studying acting at the age of 13, but after two years, his mother sent him to a military institute in Hollywood, where he was bullied and sexually assaulted because of his Jewish background.
