The renowned Making A Murderer attorney, who is renowned for overturning incorrect convictions, has been retained by the 58-year-old actor. In March 2021 in London, United Kingdom, the Dark Shadows actor lost his spectacular libel case against a writer who called him a “wife-beater.” The option to appeal was subsequently denied to him.
Depp is still suing Heard in a US court, on the other hand. The illustrious lawyer officially admitted joining Depp’s legal team in a statement to the magazine Page Six.
“For the past 30 years, I’ve defended folks who have been falsely charged with crimes.” I’m thrilled to add Johnny Depp to that group and to be a member of his dream team, who hold the same perspective and have been so effective in promoting him.
The legal team for the actor, which includes Benjamin Chew, sued Heard for $50 million in libel. The 35-year-old actress was charged about a 2019 opinion piece on domestic abuse she wrote for the Washington Post, which Depp claims was meant at him.
Amber previously accused Depp of attacking her in Los Angeles in 2015, resulting in two black eyes, a broken lip, and a nose. Despite the alarming article not mentioning anyone by name, Depp believes it is about him. Depp, though, refutes the accusations made against him.
Details of Kathleen Zellner’s life
The work of attorney Kathleen Zellner in defending persons who have been unfairly convicted is well known. In Midland, Texas, she was the second of seven children.
Her mother Winifred was a chemist who later worked as a nurse, and her father Owen Thomas was a geologist. When Zellner was nine years old, her family moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Before receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, she attended Marquette University in Wisconsin and the University of Missouri.
Having served as the Law Review’s editor-in-chief and a law clerk to 2nd District Illinois Appellate Court judge George W. Lindberg, Kathleen Zellner earned her doctorate of jurisprudence from Northern Illinois University College of Law in 1991.
One of Zellner’s many clients is Steven Avery, the subject of the 2015 Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer.” Before DNA evidence cleared him and he was released in 2003 after serving 18 years of a 32-year sentence, Avery was convicted. Two years later, he was accused of a different crime, nevertheless.
He was found guilty and given a life sentence in jail in 2007 following his murder conviction for Wisconsin photojournalist Teresa Halbach, the subject of the Netflix film.
Both Kathleen Zellner and Avery are challenging their convictions. Kevin Fox, who was falsely accused of killing his daughter Riley, was also defended by Zellner. He has cleared thanks to the DNA evidence he gave to a private lab with more sophisticated tools. In addition, she received $15.5 million in 2007 for violating Fox’s civil rights.
