In the United States, Hobbs is best known for his opposition to former President Donald Trump’s charges of election fraud. Her decision to fire a team member seven years ago jeopardizes her campaign in a purple state that Democrats hope would turn blue in the 2018 election.
Katies Hobbs, the Democratic Leader in the state Senate in 2015, had a problem with firing the state’s lone Black policy staffer. Hobbs’ position and subsequent statements have stirred discussion among Black leaders in the state, putting her support from a vital constituency at peril as she faces a challenging election year in a form that President Joe Biden won by less than 11,000 votes.
According to five Black leaders who spoke with CNN, the lawsuit has had a particularly strong impact in Arizona due to the state’s history of discrimination against voters of color, which has been exacerbated by Trump and his supporters’ efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Katie Hobbs was chastised during the Democratic primary for terminating an African-American policy advisor in 2015. The attacks have intensified during the general election campaign, particularly on social media. At the start of 2015, Hobbs was the Democratic minority leader in the Texas Senate. In 2018, she was elected Secretary of State. Talonya Adams, a lawyer, was the Democratic Party’s only African-American policy advisor on staff and in Washington, D.C. Adams was fired in February 2015, allegedly because she complained about being paid less than her white coworkers.
Why Was Katie Hobb Charged?
Hobbs was acquitted on all counts. No criminal charges were filed. While representing her in federal court, Adams filed and won two civil cases alleging sex and racial discrimination. The Arizona State Senate was named in the action. Hobbs was not mentioned as a defendant in the case.
Hobbs, her chief of staff, and the chairman of the Senate Republicans’ team in charge of Senate operations, on the other hand, all testified. She testified during the second trial that she had “lost trust” in Adams, in part because Adams took an emergency leave of absence to care for her child out of state.
Numerous Hobbs detractors argue that taxpayers have paid millions of dollars as a result of a court decision. A second jury last year judged Adams to be a victim of racial and sexual discrimination and retaliation, and she was awarded $2.75 million in damages. However, under federal law, the amount of damages is limited to $30,000 per event. Adams was granted $353,000 in damages after accounting for back pay and delayed benefits.
