Career
Tippett moved to London in 1967 to pursue a career in music, working menial jobs and performing in jazz clubs. [ In 1970, the Keith Tippett Sextet was hired for a residency at Oxford’s 100 Club, which led to a contract with Vertigo Records, which released their first two albums, You Are There… I Am Here (1970) and Dedicated to You, but You Weren’t Listening (1971). Tippett formed Centipede, a 50-piece band that included his wife Julie Driscoll, and brought together much of a generation of young British jazz and rock musicians after leaving Vertigo. In addition to some concerts (which were limited financially due to the band’s size), they recorded one double-album, Septober Energy.
In the late 1980s, he formed the quartet Mujician with Paul Dunmall on saxes, Paul Rogers on bass, and Tony Levin on drums, playing purely improvised jazz. Mujician released six albums between 1990 and 2002. KT founded the Seedbank Orchestra (SO) in Bristol in 1989 and continued to do so throughout the 1990s, performing at venues such as the Thekla, the Arnolfini, and the Bristol Old Vic.
