Kirk Ferentz, the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and his daughters, Kelly and Joanne Ferentz, chose different careers than their father.
Ferentz and Mary had five children, three of whom were boys and two of them were girls. Joanne and Kelly are now married with their own families. Kirk’s children, Brian, James, and Steve, are frequently in the spotlight as a result of their successful careers. The Ferentz sisters, on the other hand, live a quiet life.
Kirk James Ferentz, who was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, began his football career as a linebacker at the University of Connecticut (1974-76). In 1977, he was a graduate assistant for the Huskies under head coach Walt Nadzak. His coaching career began as a defensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Worcester Academy (1978-79), where he achieved professional renown.
Ferentz coached the Cleveland Browns (1993-95) and the Baltimore Ravens (1996-98) a couple of years later. Since 1999, he has served as the head football coach at the University of Iowa, where he has coached NFL players such as Tyler Linderbaum, Micah Hyde, and Matt Nelson, among others. The Iowa Hawkeyes won two Big Ten Conference championships (2002 and 2004), as well as two Big Ten West Division titles (2015 and 2021).

Ferentz, a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, is less vocal about his daughters, Kelly and Joanne, but he adores them as much as his sons. Kelly Kristin Lauridsen (née Ferentz) was born on November 30, 1985, as the second oldest of five children. Kelly will be 38 in 2023.
The third-eldest child, Joanne Barnes (née Ferentz), was born in 1988. The Ferentz sisters are two years older than each other. Brian (born March 28, 1983), James (born June 5, 1989), and Steven (born December 4, 1993) are their three brothers. Steve is nine years Kelly’s junior and seven years Joanne’s junior.

Kelly Ferentz and her husband, Walter E Lauridsen, live in Des Moines, Iowa, and have a wonderful marriage. Her spouse is the CEO of The Boyer Valley, an Arion, Iowa-based Lauridsen Group, Inc. subsidiary. He was the Vice President of Entrepreneurial Initiatives at LGl’s Essentia Protein Solutions firm before becoming CEO of the aforementioned firm.
Walter graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in Applied Economics and Management. Dornink Couture Costumes said on Facebook that the couple married on July 10, 2015, two years after her younger sister’s wedding. The ceremony was held at their home in Iowa City, Iowa. They haven’t had children together yet.
What Does Kelly Do?
Ferentz attended Iowa City High School, as did her brothers. She subsequently moved to Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Kelly also holds a juris doctorate and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Iowa.
There are no specifics about her current job, although it is thought that she works alongside her hubby. In truth, The Boyer Valley’s staff records show a woman named Kelly as the Vice President of Finance.
Younger Daughter Joanne Ferentz Is a Mother of Three Children
Ferentz, now known as “Barnes,” is married to Tyler J. Barnes, an Illinois native. He is now the University of Iowa’s director of recruitment (since 2016). While the two were dating, Kirk, Joanne’s father, hired him as a temporary administrative assistant in January 2012.
They were engaged six months later, in July 2012. Joanne and Tyler married on July 6, 2013, at their Iowa City home in front of their family and friends, after a year of engagement. On July 6, 2022, Barnes wished her a happy 9th wedding anniversary on Instagram.m The couple is the parents of three children: two daughters, Blakely and Bella, and a son, Beckett (born September 30, 2019).
Bella Mae Barnes, the newest member of the family, was born in June 2023. Tyler met Joanne, an elementary school teacher, while both were students at the University of Iowa. Barnes earned a double major in Finance and Sports Studies in 2009. He earned his master’s degree in Recreation and Sports Management in 2011.
