Kelly Jones Had Envisioned Stuart Cable Living Forever

Kelly Jones

Kelly Jones, the lead vocalist of Stereophonics, has stated that he never imagined his bandmate Stuart Cable would reach old age.

The frontman was speaking 13 years after the drummer was discovered dead in his residence after choking on his own vomit.

The forty-year-old grew up alongside Jones and was one of the band’s founding members.

Jones described the death of his companion in 2010 as “intense” in a conversation with the charity Help Musicians.

Later, the 48-year-old from Cwmaman, Rhondda Cynon Taf, composed a song in memory of Cable, who had departed the Stereophonics in 2003 and was a member of Killing for Company at the time of his passing.

Jones stated,

“Stuart appears in at least five of my visions per week. It is strange.”

Even to this day, it is quite peculiar. I lived at number 54 and he at number 62 on the same street for my entire life.

“He was playing percussion upstairs and I was playing guitar downstairs; we merged in my garage and then performed at the youth club.

“He was like another older sibling to me because he introduced me to so much music. It was his enormous chuckle and charisma that allowed him to enter a few times.

I’d like to say that his death at age 40 was a surprise, but in many respects, it wasn’t.

“He had this type of personality. I don’t believe he was ever going to reach old age.”

Jones referred to Cable as a “very funny guy,” adding that Cable’s bravado may have concealed underlying insecurities.

He stated that the drummer’s son, who now attends their performances, occasionally reminds him of Cable.

He stated,

“His son does not resemble him physically, but there are certain facial expressions that are eerie because they are identical to his own.”

The day he wrote Before Anyone Knew Our Name for Cable, according to the songwriter, was the day he “officially, properly grieved”

“It was about us as children and the desire we had to get to where we are now, and in some ways it was unfinished business, but he was funny,” he said.

Stereophonics released their first studio album, Word Gets Around, in 1997, and their second, Performance And Cocktails, led the charts in 1999.

They are known for the tracks Just Looking, Maybe Tomorrow, C’est La Vie, and Have A Nice Day. Since then, they have released seven more number-one albums, including Oochya! in 2022.
