Career
He sold the business in 1939 and joined the Royal Air Force, where he worked as an engineer at the Admiralty developing radar and electronic controls.
Following the war, he co-founded Woodlau Industries with wartime colleague Roger Laurence, beginning production in 1947 in Woking with the A100 turnover toaster, a rare appliance in the UK at the time, and then the A200 food mixer, the forerunner of the Kenwood Chef, which debuted in 1950. When Roger Laurence left, Wood renamed the company Kenwood Manufacturing Company Ltd. In 1961, the company relocated to Havant, Hampshire, employing 700 people.
Wood left Kenwood Manufacturing in 1968 after a hostile takeover by Thorn Electrical Industries, though he retained an interest in the company until his death. As a result of his membership in the Worshipful Company of Farriers, he was granted the Freedom of the City of London on May 31, 1972.
Wood served as chairman and managing director of the Dawson-Keith Group of Companies, primarily a generator manufacturer, from 1972 to 1980. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Ophthalmology in 1984. He founded Forest Mere Health Farm (now Champneys Forest Mere) and, with television commentator Peter Alliss, invested in Old Thorns Manor Hotel, his then-Hampshire home, both in Liphook. He was also chairman of the governors of Wispers School in Haslemere, Surrey (which closed in 2008). He was managing director of Hydrotech Systems between 1984–87.
