Charles Martinet, who narrated the beloved characters for more than 25 years and went on to represent Nintendo as a “Mario Ambassador,” was succeeded by him.

However, Afghani’s admirers were taken aback and disappointed to hear that he had been sent to the hospital in October 2023 due to a serious adverse reaction to a medicine he was taking.

How is he doing today, and what happened to him? This is all the information we currently have on Kevin Afghani’s health.

Kevin Afghani Health: An Allergy That Could Kill You

Kevin Afghani was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), an uncommon ailment of the skin and mucous membranes that may be brought on by an infection or a medicine response, according to his official website.

SJS may damage the eyes, mouth, throat, and genitalia in addition to causing blistering and peeling skin.

It may also result in joint discomfort, exhaustion, and fever. Complications from SJS may include organ damage, dehydration, infection, or even death.

Afghani said that since assuming the roles of Mario and Luigi, he had been suffering from anxiety and has been taking medicine to treat it.

He said that after taking the drug for a few days, he began to feel ill and had no clue he was allergic to it.

The actor said that in addition to getting a rash on his face and chest, he also had red, swollen eyes.

The actor said that after visiting the ER, he was given an SJS diagnosis and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Kevin went on to explain that he was treated with intravenous fluids, antibiotics, steroids, and painkillers throughout his two weeks in the intensive care unit.

He said that several skin grafts were required to restore the damage after losing the majority of the skin on his face and torso.

Kevin Afghani said that the inflammation brought on by SJS had also damaged his voice cords, caused eyesight loss, and impaired hearing. He claimed he felt fortunate to be alive since the death rate from SJS ranges from 10% to 30%.

Kevin Afghani’s Career: Super Mario’s New Voice

Despite his hardship, Kevin Afghani said he was motivated to get well and continue his work as a voice actor.

He expressed his gratitude for the love and support he has received from his coworkers, friends, family, and fans.

The gifted actor said that Charles Martinet’s video greetings, which wished him a quick recovery and complimented him on his work as Mario and Luigi, really moved him.

Afghani went on to say that he had always enjoyed Mario video games and that it was a privilege to be selected to provide the new voices for the adored characters.

He said that after discovering Nintendo’s online casting call, he went in for an audition for the part in 2022.

Then he submitted his demo reel, which included his voices for Mario and Luigi as well as other characters like Arnold from Genshin Impact and Raditz from Dragon Ball R&R, two of his prior voice performances.

The actor claims that he was taken aback when Nintendo called him to invite him to their Japanese headquarters for a last-minute tryout.

He claimed to have met with Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who provided him with performance criticism.

Charles Martinet, whom the well-known actor also met with, offered him advice on how to voice Mario and Luigi. Throughout the audition procedure, he claimed to have been both anxious and thrilled.

In August 2023, as part of Nintendo’s 40th anniversary commemoration of Super Mario Bros., Kevin was ecstatic to learn that he had been cast as Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

He claimed to have put a lot of effort into bringing Mario and Luigi’s voices and characteristics to life while enhancing them.
