Kevin Matthew Whitmer, a well-known hockey coach, has had a successful career. Whitmer is from Denver, Colorado, and attended Homestead High School before graduating from De Anza College in 2012. His passion for hockey and coaching propelled him to some positions in the sports and entertainment industries.
Whitmer’s career path was unusual, starting at the Nazareth Ice Oasis and finishing at GameStop. During the severe COVID-19 outbreak, he worked as a Starbucks drive-thru barista. His considerable experience includes working as a Skating Coach and Private Skills Coach for the San Jose Sharks. He also took on the post of AAA Hockey Head Coach for the San Jose Jr. Sharks until May 2023.
Kevin Whitmer Was Arrested
According to multiple accounts, recent events have placed a pall on Whitmer’s career and reputation. When word of his detention circulated, the former San Jose Jr. Sharks coach became embroiled in a scandal. Sharks Sports & Entertainment, which runs the Junior Sharks program, confirmed the arrest.
However, it did not reveal the coach’s identity or the reason for the detention. “This individual has not coached in our program since May 2023,” Sharks Sports & Entertainment stated. It’s worth noting that Whitmer had not been associated with the program since May of that year.
This makes him a potential suspect in the aforementioned arrest. Thus, the timing of his departure from the program generated widespread speculation about his involvement in the accident. According to the statement, they learned about the claims after he left the program.
Sharks Sports & Entertainment emphasized that all of their youth coaches are pre-screened and SafeSport Certified. This screening includes a thorough criminal history check to verify the suitability of coaches working with young athletes. The company reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of young athletes and their families.
The statement also emphasized their willingness to fully cooperate with any investigation into the issue. This horrible series of events has given a blow to the San Jose Sharks and their fans. The NHL club was already having a terrible season, as evidenced by their on-field struggles. With the arrest of former coach Kevin Whitmer, the organization has found itself in a negative limelight.
Where Is the Former Junior Sharks Coach Now?
Kevin Whitmer coached the Jr. Sharks Youth Hockey Club for more than six years and had a significant impact on their development. He joined Sharks Sports & Entertainment LLC in 2017 and played a significant role as AAA Head Coach.
He not only trained new coaches but also oversaw and guided existing ones. Whitmer left the San Jose Sharks in May 2023 to become the Colorado Thunderbirds’ Hockey Coach and Skills Coach. He is also linked with Denver’s TPH Academy. He teaches power skating and is the academy’s Player Development Coach for student-athletes.
