With their breakout track Unholy, Sam Smith and Kim Petras have been ruling the charts. The controversial song about infidelity in relationships spent four weeks at the top of the UK charts, peaked in more than 100 countries, and was remixed by the electronic duo Disclosure.
It’s Sam’s ninth number one, but for guest artist Kim it’s remarkable since she’s finally charted in the top 40 after years of dreaming about it.
She tells BBC Newsbeat, “It’s amazing, it’s been a great aim for me.
The 30-year-old has been making music since she was a teenager, even though her first song, I Don’t Want It At All, and first album Clarity were both published in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
Kim, who is German, claims that as a little child, she “looked at the UK Singles Charts every week.”
She explains, “I’ve simply always believed that the UK had a more intriguing view on music than does America most of the time.

Sam is non-binary, and Kim has openly discussed being a trans woman, but Kim claims she didn’t see representation at the top of the charts when she was growing up.
I’m appreciative, she says. And of course, as a young child, I would have adored seeing a transgender person reach the UK’s top spot.
Kim breaks down in tears: “I want to cry. It’s incredible. She is grateful for the support she has received from her admirers throughout the years.
They have supported me and are proud of me, she says, adding that they have been her friends for a very long time.
Kim said that she communicates with a “huge community” of trans persons who “help each other out.”
If Jesus Was A Rockstar, Kim’s follow-up single continues the religious subject from Unholy.
She claims that the song, which was produced by pop icon Max Martin, who worked on songs by Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift, is about feeling alienated from religion as a trans woman.
Tobacco club bangers
“Maybe I could have found myself in religion if it were hip and accepting, but since religion doesn’t accept trans people, it’s never been something I was able to do.
This is just my perspective on it, everyone has their relationship with spirituality and religion, she explains.
The song is a significant change from Kim’s normal releases for people who are familiar with her music.
“I’ve been producing homosexual club bangers my entire life. And I adore them! She explains, “I feel like I was born and nurtured in homosexual clubs. But it seemed like a good moment to change things up.
Each song on Kim’s second album, she claims, will have a distinct individuality while still being cohesive.
While Kim’s voice may vary from song to song, one thing she won’t change is her fearless sense of style.
She dressed as a horse to attend fashion’s greatest event, the Met Gala, in 2021, and she wore a rubber face mask to the VMAs last year.
I’m in the studio wearing insane heels because fashion is such a way for me to express myself, she says.
“I need to feel confident in myself to be creative. It plays a significant role in my life.
