The disappearance of Swedish journalist Kim Wall after she entered a submarine with self-taught engineer Peter Madsen is the subject of the two-part documentary, which was produced by Emmy nominee Erin Lee Carr. Here is all the information that viewers need to know about the horrific case before watching the upcoming HBO program.
Kim Wall and Peter Madsen’s friendship
A self-taught engineer from Denmark named Peter Madsen astonished people with his prowess and passion for space exploration and ocean study.
He called himself an “entrepreneur,” and he was a true celebrity. He rose to fame after the 2018 launch of the UC3 Nautilus, the biggest privately-built submarine in the world, which was crowdfunded.
Madsen was found guilty of homicide after that specific submarine turned into a crime scene. Kim Wall, a well-known freelance journalist, was brutally murdered and her body was found mutilated after she boarded the Nautilus to interview him. He was detained in association with her murder in 2018, and his arrest was a result.
Where is Peter now, and what happened to Kim Wall?
In 2017, after boarding the submarine to speak with Peter Madsen, the submarine’s owner, Sweden journalist Kim Wall was killed. She died in Madsen’s homemade submarine, according to The Independent, and was only meant to stay on board for two hours. She never made it back to dry land alive.
Days later, pieces of Wall’s dismembered body were found in Copenhagen’s Kge Bay. When Madsen was discovered, he offered conflicting accounts for how Wall had died, including that he had accidentally closed the submarine door on her head and buried her at sea by nautical tradition.
According to The Guardian, Peter Madsen was charged with premeditated murder, aggravated sexual assault, and desecrating a corpse. He received a prison term after being convicted guilty on all three charges. He threatened a guard in 2020 with a device that looked like a pistol and then tried to escape from prison, but authorities caught him.
