Kyra Harris Bolden, a former Michigan State Representative, made history when she was sworn in as the state’s first black female justice on the Michigan Supreme Court. According to CNN, the 34-year-old became the court’s youngest justice in its 185-year history on January 1, 2023.
The announcement follows Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s announcement in November 2022 that Bolden will replace retired Justice, Bridget McCormack. In New York, McCormack will take over as CEO of the American Arbitration Association-International Center for Dispute Resolution. Kyra Harris Bolden is a married woman with one daughter.

Kyra Harris Bolden was born in Southfield, Michigan on July 31, 1988. She is a lawyer by trade, having graduated with honors from Grand Valley State University and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
Her husband is Gregory Bolden II, a dentist in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, according to his DocSpot biography. He also works at the Detroit VA Medical Center for the Veterans Health Administration (VA).
According to theGrio, Kyra Harris Bolden was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2018. According to ABC 24 News, Bolden learned about her great-grandfather, Jesse Lee Bond, who was hanged to death in Tennessee in the 1930s, while studying for her college degree.
Bond’s nephew, Ronald Morris, claimed that the murderers castrated and abandoned his uncle in the Hatchie River. Bond’s killers escaped, according to Bolden, and his death has been ruled an accident due to drowning. She told the Free Press that the ordeal inspired her to pursue a legal career.
Previously, John Johnson Jr., executive director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, praised Bolden’s abilities and leadership qualities in an interview with the journal.
“Her trial experience as a criminal defense attorney, leadership on critical public issues, and commitment to justice — the legacy of her own great-lynching grandfather — will guide her decisions and move the court closer to achieving equal justice for all.”
According to the Detroit News, Bolden stated that her appointment to the state’s highest court would provide equitable access to justice, impartial application of the law, and treatment of individuals with respect and dignity. Mid Michigan Now reports:
“I know what the people of Michigan expect of me, and I know what the people of Michigan deserve: a hardworking Justice who takes the time to make well-reasoned and careful decisions.”
Kyra Harris Bolden will have to run for office twice to complete McCormack’s eight-year term: once in the November 2024 special election to complete McCormack’s term, and again in the November 2028 regular election.
