In 1970, Wood attended Mark Smith High School in Macon, Georgia, with his pals. He eventually went on to attend Mercer University, where he graduated with honors in 1974. Mercer University is one of the oldest law schools in the United States. He also graduated with honors from the Walter F. George School of Law in 1977. Wood litigated personal injury and medical malpractice lawsuits in the state of Georgia from 1977 through 1996.
