Career
Shankar formed a trio with his brothers L. Vaidyanathan and L. Subramaniam after performing with various Indian singers for several years.
He met jazz musicians such as Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Garrison, and John McLaughlin while attending Wesleyan University. Shankar co-founded the group Shakti with McLaughlin in 1975, one of the first to bring together Eastern and Western musical traditions. Shakti (1975), A Handful of Beauty (1976), and Natural Elements (1977) were their three albums (1977).
After the band disbanded, Shankar briefly worked as a violinist with Frank Zappa before forming The Epidemics and releasing a number of albums as a bandleader. He co-wrote the soundtrack for the film The Last Temptation of Christ (1989) with Peter Gabriel, for which he received a Grammy Award. Shankar worked on several of Gabriel’s albums in the years that followed. He has collaborated with violinist Gingger as the Duo Shankar & Gingger since 1996.
Shankar has also shared the stage with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Yoko Ono, Stewart Copeland, John Waite, Charly Garca, Steve Vai, Ginger Baker, Nils Lofgren, and Sting.
