A brief overview of Lamont Dozier’s life and career

Lamont Herbert Dozier, born in Detroit, Michigan on June 16, 1941, achieved popularity as the co-writer and producer of fourteen songs that topped the US Billboard chart. He was a member of the songwriting and producing trio Holland-Dozier-Holland with Brian and Eddie Holland.

They authored, arranged, and produced songs for musicians including Martha and the Vandellas, The Supremes, Four Tips, and others. Dozier was responsible for the arrangement and production, while Brian and Eddie were in charge of the lyrics and vocal production.

Lamont established and managed both Invictus Records and Hot Wax Records. He composed and produced hit songs for bands including Freda Payne, 100 Proof Aged for Soul, and Chairmen of the Board.

In 1962, Dozier joined Holland-Dozier-Holland as a composer and producer for Motown Records, having previously released a few singles for Detroit-based firms. In 1963, Martha and The Vandellas had a multitude of successful singles.

Lamont left Holland-Dozier-Holland in 1973 and subsequently released many solo recordings. His biggest hit in 1974 was Trying to Hold on to My Woman.

Additionally, he composed and performed the theme song for That’s My Mama. In addition to the album Lamont, he released the songs Cool Me Out and Shout About It.

In the 1980s, Dozier was a popular composer who wrote the song Two Hearts for the film Buster. The song received an Academy Award nomination and a Grammy Award. In addition to composing music for Alison Moyet and Men and Women, he also composed music for Alison Moyet.

In 1987, he composed the theme for the satirical spy flick Leonard Part 6. Without You, one of the songs topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was translated into Portuguese and Spanish. The Holland Brothers and Lamont were elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
