Larry Neumann Jr. is renowned for his exceptional performing skills

The managing director of the Famous Door Theatre Company, Larry Neumann Jr., had a lengthy and prosperous career in the entertainment industry.

In films such as Stranger Than Fiction (2006), The Merry Gentleman (2009), Stir of Echoes (1999), Sirens (1993), and Slice (1993), the archetypal Chicago stage actor appeared.

However, he is best known for his stage performances. In the mid-1980s, Neumann collaborated with New Crimes Productions and Blind Parrot Productions.

When he played the eponymous role in Charles Marowitz’s Artaud at Rodez in 1986, the dedicated actor shot himself onstage with a syringe and was subsequently nailed to a coffin.

Neumann portrayed Iago in the 1988 Chicago Shakespeare Company production of Othello, following his acclaim for his performance at Rodez. In 1995, he appeared in the one-man show Judgement.

Neumann excelled in all of his roles, whether he was portraying a Shakespearean tragic hero or a simple Chestnut Seller in the annual Goodman Theatre production of A Christmas Carol.

In 1996, he portrayed the Dalai Lama in the monologue The Dalai Lama Goes Three for Four by Eric Overmyer. His most notable performance was presumably as Richard Nickel in the 2001 production of They All Fall Down at the Lookingglass Theatre.

Larry Neumann Jr. has also appeared in a few advertisements. He also appeared in The Puppetmaster of Lodz by Writers Theatre, Under the Lintel by Noble Fool Theatricals, and The Madness of Edgar Allan Poe by First Folio Theatre.

His untimely death is a tragic loss for Chicago’s theaters, but theatergoers will long recall his performances.
