Mikkelsen was born in Gladsaxe, Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 6, 1964. His mother, Bente Christiansen, was a nurse, while his father, Henning Mikkelsen, worked as a bank teller and trade union representative. Lars and his younger brother Mads Mikkelsen, himself an actor, grew up in sterbro, a middle-class neighborhood, but when their parents obtained better jobs, the family relocated to Nrrebro. Lars has always enjoyed sports and has played handball since he was in elementary school. He also enjoyed several sorts of performing arts and sang in his high school choir.

Lars enlisted in the Royal Danish Army shortly after graduating in 1982 and served for a couple of years. However, he felt compelled to further his education and left the army in 1985, enrolling at the University of Copenhagen to study biology. However, at a New Year’s Eve party, he met his future wife Anette Stvelbk, who pushed him to try juggling by showing him her progress — in just three days of studying, she could juggle fairly well. Lars became enthralled by the concept and finally left his alma mater to play on the streets of Europe. Lars and Annette traveled across countries including Prague, Warsaw, Moscow, and London with their friends, performing on the streets and living off the money they made.
Mikkelsen eventually learned fire breathing and pantomime, as well as performing in children’s plays and circuses. He decided to become a professional actor at the age of 27 and enrolled in Denmark’s National Theatre School (the Statens Teaterskole), graduating in 1995.

Lars Mikkelsen met Anette Stvelbk in 1985 and married her in 1989. Annette is an actress who studied drama at the National School of Acting at Odense Theatre from 1993 to 1997. Lars made his acting debut in “Royal Blues,” as Henning (1997). In 1999, he starred as the titular character in “Seth,” and Victor in “Under Overfladen.” Lars played Mads in “Kira’s Reason: A Love Story” in 2000, and Peter Schou in “King’s Game” in 2004. Lars went on to appear in films such as “Cecilie” (2007), “What No One Knows” (2008), and “Flame & Citron” (2009). (2008). Later in his career, he appeared in films such as “Headhunter” (2009), for which he received the Robert Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, “What Richard Did” (2012), and “When Animals Dream” (2012).
Among his most recent film roles are “9. April” (2015), in which he played Lieutenant-Colonel Hintz, “The Day Will Come” (2016), as Frederik Heck, and “Winter Brothers” (2017). (2017). Lars may have played the on-screen Jensen brothers alongside his brother Mads in “The Salvation” in 2014. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Lars had to drop out of the film, and his character was filled by Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt.
A career in television
Lars is best known for his roles in television shows such as “Sherlock,” in which he played Charles Augustus Magnussen in the third season of the crime drama show, “House of Cards,” in which he played Russian President Viktor Petrov, and “Herrens Veje,” in which he played Johannes and won an International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor.
He also appeared in series such as “Those Who Kill,” “1864”, and “The Team,” but they were less well-known in Europe. Lars has also starred in the Danish Royal Theatre’s performance of “Mefisto” since 2004. Lars played Grand Admiral Thrawn in the “Star Wars Rebels” series from 2016 to 2018.

Lars Mikkelsen was announced to join the cast of “The Witcher” series in 2018, as Stregobor, the sorcerer from Kovir who is a firm believer in “The Curse of the Black Sun,” in four episodes. The first episode, “The End’s Beginning,” told the narrative of his battle with the Creyden princess Renfri.

Lars speaks four languages fluently: Danish, Swedish, German, and English. Fishing, listening to music, reading science fiction literature, and watching William Shakespeare’s plays are among his favorite pastimes.
