Leland began his profession in broadcast journalism soon after graduating. When he joined the Fox-affiliated TV station KTVI-TV in St. Louis, Missouri, he quickly went to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he joined KATV-TV, the ABC-affiliated virtual TV channel.
Vittert’s next stop in his early career was Rogers, Arkansas, when he joined KNWA-TV, an NBC-affiliated virtual channel television station, which led him to become a member of another NBC-affiliated station, WMTV-TV in Madison, Wisconsin. Leland also worked as a newscaster and reporter for FOX’s KDVR-TV in Denver, Colorado, as well as WFTV-TV, an ABC affiliate in Orlando, Florida.

Vittert rose to prominence in April 2015 after his coverage of the Freddie Gray riots in Baltimore, Maryland, received strong feedback from various news outlets, including The Daily Caller and the Mediate. In August 2019, Leland made headlines for ‘ambushing’ US President Donald Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro.
