Clarence Linden Garnett Ashby III was born on May 23, 1960, in Atlantic Beach, Florida, USA. He is an American citizen with the sign Gemini. Eleanor Johnson Ashby, his mother, was the Executive Director of “Leadership Jacksonville,” a nonprofit organization that specialized in delivering leadership coaching and training; Eleanor resigned on July 1, 1998. Clarence Linden Garnett Ashby Jr. is his father, and he worked as a pharmaceutical maker.

Linden was interested in sports and martial arts from a young age, but he realized he wouldn’t earn a living from them: ‘I knew I was never going to make a living surfing, skating, or certainly not playing soccer.’ I would have done it if I could. But those men are on another level,’ he stated in a 2013 interview with Digital Journal. Despite this, Linden spent his childhood on the beaches of Northern Florida, surfing since he was nine years old, and was even invited to compete in the East Coast Championships while in high school.

Ashby graduated from The Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where she spent two years honing her acting skills under the tutelage of Sanford Meisner.

Linden met his wife, Susan Walters, on the set of the “Loving” series in 1983. He already had a regular role in the soap opera, and she was invited to appear as a guest performer in a handful of episodes. His performance, however, was greatly praised by the show’s writers, and he was added to the regular cast in 1985. The pair believes that when Susan first saw Linden, she told her make-up artist that he was the man she was going to marry.

Despite the fact that it appeared to be a joke, and Susan and Linden didn’t communicate much until 1985 when Linden joined the cast as a regular, the situation turned out to be serious, and after three days of spending time together after work, they moved in together, and five months later they married on April 21, 1986. Susan gave birth to their first daughter, Frances Grace, in 1991, and Savannah Elizabeth joined the family in 1992.
