He saw action in both the War of the Polish Succession and the War of the Austrian Succession, and his distinguished service earned him the rank of brigadier general. In 1756, King Louis XV assigned him to lead New France’s defense against the British during the Seven Years’ War. Montcalm had notable victories in 1756, 1757, and 1758, but British mobilization of large numbers of troops against New France resulted in military setbacks in 1758 and 1759 (when he was promoted to lieutenant general in January), culminating in Montcalm’s death at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham.
Montcalm’s service in New France was marked by conflict with the colony’s Governor General, Pierre de Rigaud, marquis de Vaudreuil-Cavagnial. During the Seven Years’ War, these men led the war effort in New France.
Montcalm is a contentious figure among military historians, with some harshly criticizing his decisions in Quebec. He has, however, been widely memorialized, particularly in France, Quebec, and parts of New York and Lower Michigan.
