Temelkovski ran as the Liberal candidate in the new Oak Ridges—Markham riding in the 2004 Canadian federal election. By 11,252 votes, he defeated Conservative candidate Bob Callow. He was a backbencher for the Paul Martin government. Temelkovski was the first Macedonian-born Canadian Member of Parliament. He was appointed to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration in 2004. He was also a member of the Standing Committee on International Trade.
He was re-elected in 2006, defeating Callow once more. The Liberals lost the election, and he remained in opposition for one term. During that time, he was the Public Works and Government Services critic. He was defeated by Conservative candidate Paul Calandra by 545 votes in the 2008 election. He tried once more. In the 2011 election, he was defeated by Calandra yet again, this time by more than 20,000 votes. Temelkovski expressed interest in the nomination for the new Markham—Stouffville riding in 2013, but the party chose Jane Philpott, who went on to defeat Calandra in the 2015 election.
