Georgi Rumenov, Madison Keys’ coach, who is he?

In January 2022, Madison Keys, an American tennis player, started working with renowned tennis instructor Georgi Rumenov Payakov.

Payakov, a native of Madrid, Spain, has had a prosperous tennis career as both a player and a coach.

He played on the ATP Professional Tennis Tour for more than ten years, finishing with singles and doubles rankings of 390 and 374, respectively.

Payakov won three titles in 2015, taking home the singles and doubles crowns in the Portugal F5 competition as well as the singles crowns at the Portugal F6 and F9 competitions.

Additionally, he competed in the Portugal F2 and Spain F7 championships, where he made the finals. However, Payakov has had the most influence during his time as a coach.

Before working with Madison Keys, Payakov spent the 2016–17 and 2017–18 seasons as a graduate assistant for head coach Katarina Petrovic.

Payakov has improved Keys’ game noticeably since taking over as her coach.

Her ability to strike from both wings and her strong groundstrokes, which frequently put opponents under strain, define her style of play.

By reaching the fourth round of the French Open and the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open in 2022, Keys set new personal records.

Keys represented side USA at the first United Cup in 2023 and won all five of her matches, helping her side to victory.
