The killing of Ukrainian boxer Maksym Galinichev in the Luhansk area at the hands of the Russian military has hit the sports community hard. Fighting Russian troops killed Ukrainian boxer Maksym Galinichev. The young athlete died fighting in Luhansk with Ukraine’s 25th Sycheslav Airborne Brigade.
Vladyslav Heraskevych, a Ukrainian skeleton racer, tweeted that Galinichev died on March 10. Karim Zidan of Bloody Elbow reports that Galinichev’s death increases the Ukrainian war against Russia’s incursion to three combat athletes.
Just after the conflict began, Wladimir Klitschko joined the Ukrainian Military Forces as a reservist in the Territorial Defense Brigade, like Maksym. After the war, heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk moved home and joined the Kyiv Territorial Defence.

The boxer, who paused his career to join the military last year, has many admirers. Team GB Boxing mourned the loss of 22-year-old Ukrainian and European Youth champion Maksym Galinichev on Twitter. “Hail to hero,” said fellow Olympian Vladyslav Heraskevych, who hailed Galinichev for dying for Ukraine.
One Twitter user called Maksym a hero for using his life and soul to assist Ukraine win. Maksyma is a true hero who died for freedom and memory, said another. The user also expressed his condolences to family and friends. His sole daughter, 3, is his only surviving kid. Galinichev is believed to have died in Luhansk, Ukraine.
The career of Maksym Galinichev
Boxing gold medalist Galinichev represented Russia at the 2017 and 2018 European Youth Championships. Galinichev returned to Ukraine with an under-56kg silver medal from the 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina. He chose to represent his country at the European Boxing Championships in Armenia last year.
Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian government advisor, said Maksym, the European youth boxing champion, died defending Ukraine in Luhansk. Galinichev won silver in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. Galinichev, an experienced amateur boxer, won gold at the EBC European Youth Boxing Championships.
