Ramón Maddon intended to take Lanzini to Boca Juniors for a test match after spotting players like Juan Román Riquelme, Carlos Tevez, and Esteban Cambiasso, but the young Lanzini declined, stating that he only wanted to play for the team he supported: River Plate Club.
- He was sent to River Plate in 2002. Before being hired by Pedro Vega, a former player and coach of lower club categories, he started his training and employment as a playmaker at small levels. With just two goals separating him from colleague striker Leonardo Salguero, who had 11 goals, Lanzini’s eighth division side won the divisional championship in 2008. He concluded the season with nine goals. In the Superclásico on November 2, 2008, River Plate defeated Boca Juniors 3-0 with goals from Lanzini and another player.
- For the 2010 winter preseason, Lanzini was chosen by River Plate’s first team coach, ngel Cappa, to play in several games in Salta Province.
