Former New Jersey track star Mario Heslop was killed on Monday night in a horrific three-vehicle collision in Somerset County.

Around 5:30 p.m., Heslop was operating an eastbound 2013 Infiniti Q50S on Hamilton Street in Franklin Township when he crossed the center line and hit a westbound car.

Another westbound car struck the second vehicle as a result of the collision. Heslop was brought to a nearby hospital, where he passed away as a result of his wounds.

While the driver of the third car declined medical attention, the driver of the second vehicle was hospitalized as well after suffering injuries.

Heslop’s passing stunned and grieved his loved ones, friends, coaches, and teammates who regarded him as a gifted, modest, and kind individual who always had a grin on his face.

Heslop was of Jamaican descent and was born in New Brunswick. One of the greatest high school sprinters in New Jersey history, he attended Franklin High School.

He won several state championships in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter events and was voted the boyboy’sack athlete of the year by NJ.com in both 2018 and 2019.

In the 300-meter dash and the 55-meter dash, he also established state records.

Heslop resumed his track career at North Carolina A&T University after finishing high school, where he raced at the NCAA Division I level.

Later, he changed teams and joined Georgia-based professional track club OXY Athletics.

At the Kennesaw State University Invitational in April, he finished first in the 100- and 200-meter events with times of 10.18 and 20.64, respectively.

Heslop was regarded as a gifted, diligent, and modest player who always had a grin on his face by his former coaches and teammates.

In the track and field community and in the hearts of those who knew him, his passing has left a gaping hole.
