Early Life and Bio

Milley was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, on June 20, 1958. He attended the Belmont Hill School in Winchester, Massachusetts, where he was born. Milley earned a Bachelor of Arts in politics from Princeton University in 1980 after writing a 185-page final thesis titled “A Critical Analysis of Revolutionary Guerrilla Organization in Theory and Practice.” Milley also possesses a Columbia University Master of Arts in international relations and a Naval War College Master of Arts in national security and strategic studies. He also attended the MIT Center for International Studies Seminar XXI National Security Studies Program and graduated with honors.

His father, Alexander (1924–2015), joined the US Navy as a Navy Corpsman in March 1943. Milley served in the 4th Marine Division and landed on the islands of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He worked as a restaurateur and food trader after the war. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization open only to practicing Catholic males. Mary Elizabeth (née Murphy), Milley’s mother, was a nurse who served with the Navy’s WAVES during WWII and was described by Milley as a “break-the-glass-ceiling” type of lady.

Milley was raised in a working-class Boston area. He went to a catholic elementary school and played hockey. Milley was recruited to Belmont Hill School and then to Princeton University on a hockey scholarship due to his grades and hockey. Career

Milley was commissioned as an Armor officer in 1980 through Princeton’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program, and he spent the most of his career in Infantry postings. Milley’s military service includes stints with the 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group,[17] 7th Infantry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Readiness Training Center, 25th Infantry Division, Joint Operations Staff, and Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense.

Throughout his military career, Milley has held a variety of command and staff positions in eight divisions and special forces. From 1996 to 1998, he was the commander of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea. From December 2003 to July 2005, he was commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light); he was deputy commanding general for operations of the 101st Airborne Division, from July 2007 to April 2008; and from November 2011 to December 2012, he was commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division. From December 2012 to August 2014, Milley was the commander of III Corps, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Then, from May 2013 to February 2014, the Joint Command of the International Security Assistance Force. From August 2014 until August 2015, he was the commanding general of the United States Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
