Former University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel On July 1, 2014, he was named the university’s 14th president, filling the position left vacant by Mary Sue Coleman’s retirement. Mark had a five-year contract with the institution at the time. Later, he obtained a new contract with a five-year extension that was set to expire in 2024. He intended to leave the role in 2023, however, on January 15, 2022, he was ousted or sacked from his previous position as president of the University of Michigan. This action was taken as a result of the “inappropriate relationship with a university employee.” He is the university’s only president who has had a successful motion of no confidence carried against him by the faculty senate.

In 1991, he joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and in 1999, he moved to the department of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley. He began as an associate professor at the institution and was promoted to full-time professor in 2002. From 2008 to 2011, Mark served as the dean of the biological sciences at UC Berkeley. He was appointed provost of Brown University in 2011. Under Mark Schlissel’s administration, the University of Michigan’s tuition soared to the highest of any American public university.
Mark’s career began with a disagreement over a job ad for president at the University of Michigan. In 2018, John Cheney-Lippold, an associate professor of American culture, refused to sign a letter of recommendation for a student seeking admission abroad in Israel, citing human rights concerns and his support for the BDS movement. As a result, the assistant professor was placed on probation, with his pay reduced and further vacations cancelled as part of the punishment. At the time, the institution and Mark Schlissel’s actions were challenged, citing his discipline, free speech, boycott rights, and professional independence.
Controversies
Mark got into an argument with an activist about continued university funding in the oil and gas industry. In this regard, students were planning to hold a gathering at Mark Schlissel’s office in the evening following the Global Climate Strike, demanding a one-hour meeting with Mark Schlissel. Mark continued to deny the meeting, and an unknown administrative source summoned the University of Michigan police. Following the threats, a large number of students were detained and charged with trespassing on university property.
The third incident occurred on December 8, 2021, when it was discovered that Mark was having an illicit relationship with a university employee. Following an examination, authorities discovered that Mark was engaging in an email conversation with that subordinate using a University email account. He was later found to be incompatible with the university’s dignity and prestige. In this manner, Mark was ousted as President of the University of Michigan by the University Board on January 15, 2022.
