Mark Whipple’s Professional Career
Whipple began his coaching career as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University in 1980, then moved on to Union College as the offensive coordinator for the next two seasons. In 1984, Whipple returned to his alma mater (Brown) as an assistant coach, working with the wide receivers. The next season, Mark worked on the coaching staff of the Arizona Wranglers of the United States Football League, where he dealt with quarterbacks under George Allen.
Whipple spent two years as the offensive coordinator at the University of New Hampshire before becoming the head coach of the University of New Haven Chargers in 1988. His New Haven team finished 12–1 and was rated fifth in the USA in 1992. The team dominated all NCAA divisions in terms of scoring offense (50.5 points per game) and total offense (587.7 yards per game). His 1993 New Haven team was named Sports Illustrated’s “Best Offense in College Football” with an average of 52.5 points and 557.6 yards of total offense per game.
Ascend to Fame
His team was ranked as high as second in the country in 1993. He was hired as the head football coach of his alma mater, Brown University, in 1994, and remained there for the following four seasons. Whipple’s Brown squad in 1997 set Ivy League and school total offense records (474.3 yards per game), including a single-game record of 629 yards against Yale. In 1995, Mark John Wipple’s team set a number of single-season records, including the most points (282), overall offense (4,165 yards), passing offense (2,502 yards), and first downs (2,502 yards) (227).
On January 7, 2009, Whipple was named offensive coordinator at Miami. Whipple and head coach Randy Shannon was fired following the end-of-season loss against South Florida on November 27, 2010. Jeff Jagodzinski was eventually hired. He was considered to be the front-runner for the position of Connecticut Huskies head football coach, which became available after Randy Edsall left following the 2010 season to become head coach at the University of Maryland, College Park. On the other side, Connecticut recruited Paul Pasqualoni on January 13, 2011.
