Marlene Knaus- Relationship, Married Life
Marlene rose to fame after marrying the late Niki Lauda. She met Niki in 1975, and after a few months of dating, the two married in 1976. They were one of the most prominent celebrity couples at the time, which put them on the media’s radar and resulted in their love story reaching page three headlines.
According to some credible stories, Marlene fainted after seeing her husband’s damaged eyelids and burns following his nearly fatal Grand Prix accident. Niki’s first love was not Marlene. He had dated Mariella Reininghaus for eight years before breaking up with her in 1975 to begin dating Marlene because he was smitten by her beauty and the captivating charisma she portrayed.
Marlene had previously dated Curt Jurgens, a German-Austrian film and stage actor; Marlene met Niki at a dinner party hosted by Curt at his home. Niki was one of the most successful Formula One racers, having won the World Drivers Championship three times, in 1975, 1977, and 1984. He is also the only driver to have won championships with both McLaren and Ferrari.
He was also a businessman who founded two airlines, Niki and Lauda Air. The film “Rush,” which depicted his 1976 F1 battle with James Hunt, was released in 2013. The couple had their first child, Lucas Lauda, in 1979, and their second son, Mathias Lauda, on January 30, 1981 – he grew up to be a racing driver like his father. Lucas manages his brother’s business.
Niki also had another son, Christoph, from an adulterous affair with an unnamed lady, who was born in 1982.
Despite the adultery, Marlene remained loyal to her husband even after the incident became public. However, after a decade and a half of marriage, the couple filed for divorce in 1991. They continued in touch after it was settled, and Marlene was frequently seen at family gatherings. Niki married Birgit Wetzinger, a flight attendant working for his airline, despite the fact that she did not remarry or begin a relationship with another guy. In 2008, the couple welcomed twins, a boy called Max and a girl named Mia.
Marlene is currently residing in Ibiza, Spain, where she owns a home that Niki left her. She gets along well with Birgit, and the two even shared responsibilities when her ex-husband was dying in a Zurich hospital. Niki died on May 20, 2019, after a protracted illness. He received a lung transplant in August 2018 and two kidney transplants before that.
His net worth was signed off to Birgit and his four children after his death, with a sizable portion going to Marlene and his other kid, Christoph.
