He had dated Mariella Reininghaus for eight years before breaking up with her in 1975 to begin dating Marlene because he was smitten by her beauty and the captivating charisma she portrayed.
Marlene had previously dated Curt Jurgens, a German-Austrian film and stage actor; Marlene met Niki at a dinner party hosted by Curt at his home. Niki was one of the most successful Formula One racers, having won the World Drivers Championship three times, in 1975, 1977, and 1984. He is also the only driver to have won championships with both McLaren and Ferrari.
