Matty Healy of 1975 was featured on a recent episode of The Adam Friedland Show. During the show, Mullen, Friedland, and Matty Healy got into a heated debate about the artist Ice Spice. At one point during the audio session, they even had an ill-advised argument about her ancestry and nationality.
The Munch vocalist has been described as Polynesian, Arctic, and Chinese. During the debate, the triumvirate made fun of all three dialects. Healy claimed to have DMed Ice Spice. This sparked a conversation about her appearance. One even went as far as saying:
“She looks like an Arctic Spice Girl… This petite Asian lady. ‘I freestyle and write songs,’ he explains. “Do Inuits speak like that?”
They burst out laughing when they heard this statement. They imitated the dialects of the races to which they believed she belonged, causing outrage on social media. According to Matty Healy, this was the case with Cold Spice.
The three continued to speak about her and dubbed her a “beautiful lady who published one single”. Much to viewers’ dismay, one of the presenters questioned Healy if he had slipped into the rapper’s DMs and asked her if she was an “Eskimo”. When the remarks first aired, they received little criticism, but Yungblud stepped in and expressed his feelings on the show.
Yungblud draws the audience’s attention to the problem and lends his support to Ice Spice
Yungblud commented on the show shortly after it aired, criticizing the hosts and Healy for their remarks about Ice Spice. When Healy saw the message, he immediately responded with a video mocking the performer. In his Instagram story, he decided to parody another dialect, Yungblud’s heavy Yorkshire drawl.
He scribbled “emo” across his brow as well. Matty Healy also stated in the film that he does not advocate for anything, but rather opposes it, and that he does not have a specific position on anything. He continued, “He usually opposes the most obvious moral issues.”
Suffice it to say, Healy’s comments on Ice Spice and, later, Yungblud went viral, and he gained a lot of social media traction. As people questioned why he didn’t face more criticism, the performer appeared defiant, which enraged them. Netizens have also begun labeling him and informing him of Ice Spice’s nationality.
Matty Healy has a sizable following that appears to be second-guessing their decision to join him. The Ice Spice scandal is not the singer’s first brush with controversy. During one of his most recent popular performances, he was accused of making the Nazi salute. Supporters wondered if he was being satirical or anti-Semitic.
